Alaska Boroughs and Census Areas

Alaska is divided into 30 boroughs and census areas, each with its own local offices, historical records, and resources relevant to death index research. Alaska does not use the county system common in other states. Instead, organized boroughs handle local governance, while unorganized census areas have no borough-level government. In both cases, death records are centralized at the state level through the Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS).
